15 March 2010 - Kent Horner places 3rd at the Global 11

This event was thrown in on the calendar as a train through event but the competitive athlete in me does not go without a fight! I tried not to set expectations for this event but when I saw the start list in the morning I knew I had to raise the bar. The start list included 4 Olympians, a world champ and more. Swimming has always been a strength of mine but with the training for these long events I have simply spent more time on the other disciplines, trying to get away with as few swim sessions as possible, sometimes only 2 a week. The Olympic distance swimmers are quite a lot quicker so I had to really swim hard to keep up. It went well, and I only managed to concede 15sec to Tim Don 2008 World Champion.
I got on the bike and chased hard, I felt a little flat in the beginning of the bike but I think this was due to the 4 hour training session on the bike the day before. I rode past Sander Berk from the Netherlands and he stuck like glue for a while. I lay patient, and then, I showed him what Cape Town wind was all about!! I attacked and managed to get a minute lead on him, and I began closing in on Tim Don.
I always say it’s never a race without some sort of excitement and it’s how you handle the situation thatdetermines the outcome of your race. Somehow, I was miss directed at the end of the bike loop. I ended up running across beach sand and getting to a story high drop to the ground. My first thought was “whew, no way, especially with my new wheels”. I looked around for another way down but there was none. Just below I could see the transition, and I knew, If I were to go back and around it would cost me at least 3 minutes. So I jumped with my bike landing up in a tree to break the fall and me doing the tuck and roll in the shrubs... I was back on the course and my race went on.
I think due to the longer training, I found the 10km run leg went very quickly. I unfortunately got caught by Sander Berk in the last few km of the run, but we continued the battle to the finish. Sander finished 17seconds ahead of me.
On the whole a good it was a good race as I was first South African home and managed to beat most of South Africa’s best Olympic distance athletes so I was happy with my race.
Next up is Singapore 70.3. My training has been very hectic these last few weeks, so I am feeling good and ready to take on a few more World Champions.determines the outcome of your race.
