Rautenbach played 14 Tests for the Springboks including a try on debut against Wales in 2002, ending with his last Test against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2004. He started his provincial career with WP but joined the Lions for a season before heading straight back to Cape Town.
It was his ability as an extremely powerful scrummager that attracted London Irish to this huge man from the Northern Free State. He developed a fearsome reputation playing for London Irish – and it was this fact that often led successive Springbok coaches to enquire about his availability to play for the Boks
